Faith’s Story
On February 10, 2017, Faith Guynn’s life changed forever. While visiting Florida, she became the victim of a carjacking. During the robbery, Faith was shot in the chest, and the bullet became lodged between two discs in her spine, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down. Though her recovery was long and difficult, Faith never lost her determination or her spirit. She is able to move her neck and head, and has limited motion in one arm.
After the shooting, Faith returned home to West Virginia, where she could count on the love and support of her family. On July 23, 2023, she underwent surgery at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. Afterward, she spent the next 15 months in a nursing home working hard on her recovery.
“Life in the nursing home was not the greatest,” Faith admitted with a laugh. “The workers and residents were wonderful, but I was a lot younger than most of them. I usually hung out with the staff in the therapy department who were closer to my age.”
It was during a conversation with a social worker that Faith first heard about the Take Me Home (TMH) program. The social worker knew Faith wanted to live independently again, but still stay close to her family. She encouraged Faith to apply, believing TMH could help her make that dream a reality.
Faith describes the experience as “amazing.” With the help of TMH’s housing specialist, Brooklyn, and transition coordinator, Autumn, she was able to find an apartment, complete all the necessary paperwork, and make her dream a reality. She says TMH team went above and beyond—helping her get furniture, kitchen supplies, bedding, towels, and even stocking her pantry and refrigerator before she moved in.
Today, Faith is thriving. “I have a puppy and a cat, and my freedom,” she said proudly. “I’m happier now. I love being in charge of my own health and living life on my schedule.”
When asked what advice she would give to others living in a healthcare facility, Faith didn’t hesitate. “Apply! Get out and find your freedom. It may be a long process, but it’s worth it.”
Faith’s story doesn’t end there, it’s just beginning. In the Fall of 2025, she started online classes with Southern New Hampshire University, where she’s pursuing a degree in psychology. With her resilience, positivity, and drive, there’s no doubt Faith will continue inspiring everyone she meets.
